Apsara breeds for dogs of exceptional show quality and has been reasonably successful in doing this. We are not in the dog owning/collecting business though and from time to time, there are pet-quality and show-quality dogs available to selected caregivers.

All dogs are sold with a pretty reasonable co-ownership contract. Basically the contract says "I promise to give you a healthy, quiet and well socialized dog" - or else - and spells out the remedies. On the other hand, you promise to look after the dog - or else - and spells out my expectations and remedies. In my opinion, it is best to expose the expectations BEFORE the purchase so that you can be the best dog owner ever and we can live happily ever after. Where the dogs are eligible for conformation showing, Apsara will usually expect them to be shown to their Championship. Pets and show quality dogs sold as pets are sold with a non-breeding agreement or are neutered before being sent to the new caregiver. Co-ownerships also help to protect the Apsara name against the unexpected and to ensure that breeding dogs are selectively bred to improve the breed.

Papillons are not an easy dog to find at a pet store or to buy from a breeder - that doesn't mean the process has to be difficult or terribly invasive. I would ask that you do your homework regarding why a pap in the first place and how you see the doggie fitting in with your family's lifestyle. Here are some questions that you should have answers to.

*******************************************************************************************************

1. On average, how many hours a day will your papillon be left alone? [Comment: these are highly intelligent animals with the mentality of a two year old. How long would you leave a two year old alone?]

2. Do you have a securely fenced area that is attached to your home? You should be prepared to describe your home and the indoor/outdoor areas that the dog will have access to. If you rent, I will need the landlord's name and phone number since s/he may have their own set of expectations. Where will your papillon live - crate, your pillow, outside, run of house?

3. How many papillons have you been acquainted with? Do you have a colour, gender, size or age preference? If so, what are they? What do you expect the activity level of a papillon to be and what are you looking for - lap/cuddle/pillow passive dog or active, gregarious, and curious? Most paps are somewhere in between.

4. Who lives with you? If there are any children under 12, what are their ages? Why do YOU want a Papillon: - for the child? personal companion? performance: agility, obedience, flyball? or - breeding? [Comment: if for a child, who will be doing the socialization, feeding, exercize, grooming, washing, pickup, discipline, cuddling and be the primary caregiver - be prepared to discuss :-)] Does everyone in your household want a papillon? If not, who and why not?

5. Are there any traits that you would find unsuitable for your situation?. Have you ever given a dog away? If so, why? If there are other animals in the house, what are they?

6. What are your plans for training (obedience, personal trainer, train at home, etc)? What method will you use to housebreak your papillon? [Comment: its YOUR home - not the dog's and training makes it really easy for the doggie to keep you happy].

7. Are you willing to have your home and premises looked at prior to acquiring the papillon?
